Which Lead Enrichment Data Does Your B2B Campaign Actually Need?

Before paying for more contact and company information, identify what your sales team cannot currently decide from the leads it receives.

Lead enrichment adds information to your existing records. Prioritise fields that help your team check eligibility, assign ownership or prepare a relevant response. This guide helps campaign and operations owners choose useful additions, check their sources and avoid paying for columns nobody uses.

Your sales team wants more context on campaign leads. The data supplier offers dozens of extra fields, and the package looks comprehensive. Before buying it, ask your colleagues which missing fact is making their work harder.

A verified subsidiary can settle who owns a lead. A clearer job responsibility can improve the first conversation. A detailed technology profile may do little for either if the campaign doesn’t depend on that technology. Choose the information by the decision it improves.

Write an enrichment specification with acceptance consequences

Divide the proposed fields into three groups. A mandatory field determines eligibility or a required next action. Optional context helps preparation but does not decide acceptance. An unavailable field remains explicitly unknown, with a research or follow-up route if the information matters.

For a hypothetical campaign targeting a UK subsidiary, verified operating entity and relevant responsibility may be mandatory. A parent company’s turnover may be optional context. A project budget is unknown unless it has been established through the agreed qualification process. Filling that last cell with an estimate would change the meaning of the delivery, not simply improve completeness.

Our delivery methodology explains that additional fields can be carried into later batches and earlier records enriched where information is available. That supports a staged brief: solve the decision that blocks use now, then add context whose value becomes clear during follow-up.

For each requested field, record its source requirement and the consequence of absence. “Hold for entity review” is actionable. “More complete profile” is not an acceptance rule. This article concerns what information to commission; the broader ABM data guide explains how those information types fit together.

Find the decision your team can’t make

Identify what the team can’t currently decide. Is the account eligible? Does the person belong to the right business unit? Who should respond? Which content is relevant? What question should be asked next?

Then identify the minimum information needed to resolve that problem. If routing depends on the operating entity, a verified entity relationship may be more valuable than a detailed technology profile. If the use case requires a particular responsibility, clarifying function may matter more than collecting another phone number.

Give each proposed field an intended user and a practical purpose. If your team can’t explain what will change when it arrives, leave it out for now. You can add it later when there’s a decision worth supporting.

Choose fields that change follow-up

DecisionUseful enrichmentWhat it shouldn’t imply
Audience eligibilityIndustry, geography, operating entity, agreed size criteriaThat the account has a live project
Correct ownershipAccount ID, territory, existing relationshipThat a domain alone resolves every subsidiary
Relevant conversationFunction, responsibility, stated use caseThat seniority equals approval authority
Technical relevanceVerified product and location evidenceThat the account wants to replace the product
Next-step timingDirectly stated planning windowThat an estimated date is a confirmed commitment
Data usabilityVerification date, source, exception noteThat a populated field is necessarily accurate

This prioritisation can change by campaign. A broad educational programme may need fewer fields than a tightly specified qualification exercise. Agree the required set before sourcing and distinguish mandatory fields from optional context.

Keep the source and date with each important field

A field without a source can be difficult to challenge. Record where the information came from, when it was observed or verified and whether it is direct, inferred or modelled.

HG Insights’ enrichment description covers several categories of added business information. That breadth doesn’t mean every category belongs in every campaign. The selection should follow the decision the team needs to make.

For technology data, location and date may be essential context. For job responsibility, a public title may be weaker than a recent direct clarification. For purchase timing, a modelled estimate shouldn’t overwrite an explicit response without preserving the difference.

Keep the original value where it helps audit a change. Normalising “VP Ops” into a standard function and seniority structure is useful, but the team may still need the source wording to resolve an ambiguity.

Why four useful fields can beat twenty extra ones

Imagine a fictional campaign delivering relevant content requests from target companies. The follow-up team has names, emails, company names and job titles. It struggles to assign records because several brands belong to shared parent groups.

One enrichment option adds twenty broad firmographic and technology fields. Another verifies the operating entity, parent relationship, region and existing account owner. The second option directly addresses the current routing problem.

Once ownership is reliable, a later phase can add use-case-specific context. If the campaign concerns integration with a particular platform, verified technology evidence may then change relevance. If not, that field may add little immediate value.

In this example, the useful purchase is the information that resolves ownership. Once the leads reach the right people, you can judge which additional context would improve their conversations. Sequencing the work stops a large enrichment project from delaying a smaller fix your team needs immediately.

Resolve conflicts before overwriting

Different sources may disagree about employer, title, company size or technology use. Set rules for which source governs which field and when manual review is required.

Don’t let the latest import automatically overwrite a recent human verification with an older third-party value. Likewise, a sales note from years ago shouldn’t be treated as permanently authoritative. Compare evidence quality and date, then preserve the decision.

HubSpot’s import documentation emphasises identifiers for updating and associating records. Check the import’s behaviour before applying enrichment at scale, so added context doesn’t create duplicate people or companies.

Run a small representative sample through the intended workflow. Inspect the values, associations and downstream actions. The risk isn’t only an inaccurate field; it is an inaccurate field triggering an unsuitable campaign or owner change.

Keep researched context separate from confirmed need

A company expanding internationally may plausibly face operational complexity. That is a research hypothesis, not a confirmed pain point. Store the observation and interpretation separately.

The same applies to revenue and seniority. Company revenue can support an eligibility criterion. It doesn’t establish a project budget. A senior title can support persona screening. It doesn’t confirm buying authority.

If follow-up depends on budget, need or responsibility, establish those through suitable qualification. Research can help your sales team prepare, but it shouldn’t fill an unanswered question with a commercially convenient assumption.

Check whether anyone uses the added information

Track whether the added information reduces unresolved ownership, improves eligible account matching, clarifies responsibility or shortens the preparation needed for follow-up. Use measures linked to the field’s purpose.

Also review error and conflict rates. A high completion percentage can conceal unreliable values. Sample the records the team actually uses and record corrections by source and field type.

Avoid claiming that enrichment alone created downstream pipeline unless the evidence supports that causal claim. Several process changes may occur at the same time. Report the operational improvement directly and investigate commercial effects separately.

For the wider data picture, read what information an ABM programme needs. ABM Logic’s lead generation services can help specify the fields and checks that make a campaign response ready for its next action.
